More Bullying but Still Feel Supported by Peers?</span></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Teenagers with ADHD reported experiencing bullying at a rate </span><b>64% higher than their and greater difficulty making friends, but they did not necessarily feel that they had less support from their peers.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There may be several possible explanations for this finding.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some teenagers with ADHD may have a smaller number of friendships but may feel very close to those friends.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Another possibility is that a teenager’s idea of having enough support may be different from what a parent, therapist, or healthcare professional considers adequate social support.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some teenagers may also depend strongly on one or two close relationships. Even when they experience wider social difficulties, those relationships may still make them feel supported.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These are possible explanations rather than conclusions proven by the study.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The </span><b>Child Mind Institute</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> reports that about half of adolescents with ADHD experience serious difficulties with peer relationships. They may also be more likely to experience rejection, being ignored, or bullying.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, having difficulty with social skills does not mean that a teenager has no meaningful friendships or social support.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This difference is important.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Support should not always focus only on helping teenagers make more friends. In some cases, it may also be valuable to protect, strengthen, and support the positive relationships they already have.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Schools may not always hear directly from teenagers about their social experiences. 									<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">New research suggests that children with stronger ADHD traits may have a higher risk of physical health problems, disability, and multiple long-term health conditions later in adulthood.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At the same time, another study suggests that certain types of exercise, especially mind-body activities such as yoga and tai chi, may support mental health in young people with ADHD.</span></p><h2><b>Childhood ADHD Traits and Health in Midlife</b></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A large study published in </span><b>JAMA</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> followed 10,930 people over several decades.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Researchers found that adults who had more severe ADHD traits by age 10 had more physical health problems and greater physical health-related disability by age 46 compared with people who had fewer ADHD traits during childhood.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Among people with higher childhood ADHD traits, </span><b>42.1% developed multimorbidity</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> by age 46. Multimorbidity means having two or more physical health conditions at the same time.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In comparison, </span><b>37.5% of people with fewer childhood ADHD traits</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> developed multimorbidity.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The study also found that the connection between childhood ADHD traits and physical health-related disability appeared to be stronger in women than in men.</span></p><h2><b>Other Health Risk Factors May Also Play a Role</b></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Researchers found that several health and lifestyle factors may partly explain the connection between ADHD traits and poorer physical health later in life.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These factors included:</span></p><ul><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Smoking</span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Alcohol use</span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Psychological distress</span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lower educational attainment</span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Higher body mass index (BMI)</span></li></ul><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, even after considering these factors, ADHD traits were still significantly linked with physical health problems and disability.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The researchers said healthcare professionals should be aware that people with ADHD may have a higher risk of physical health problems.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They also suggested that treatment and support should not focus only on ADHD symptoms. problems and other co-occurring conditions may contribute to a shorter life expectancy in people with ADHD.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A January 2025 study published in </span><b>The British Journal of Psychiatry</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> compared people diagnosed with ADHD with people without ADHD.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The study estimated that:</span></p><ul><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Women with diagnosed ADHD had a life expectancy about </span><b>8.6 years shorter</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> than women without ADHD.</span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Men with diagnosed ADHD had a life expectancy about </span><b>6.8 years shorter</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> than men without ADHD.</span></li></ul><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The researchers suggested that this difference may be related to factors that could potentially be improved, including health risks and unmet needs for ADHD treatment, mental healthcare, and physical healthcare.</span></p><h2><b>Exercise May Support Mental Health in People With ADHD</b></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Exercise may be a helpful part of ADHD management for some people.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A 2023 survey of around 11,000 ADDitude readers found that many people reported positive effects from regular physical activity.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Around half of the people who exercised regularly rated exercise as an </span><b>“extremely” or “very” effective</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> ADHD support.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The survey also found that:</span></p><ul><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>94% of caregivers</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> recommended exercise for ADHD symptoms.</span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><b>95% of adults</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> recommended exercise for ADHD symptoms.</span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Only </span><b>13% said a doctor had recommended exercise</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to help reduce symptoms.</span></li><li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Only </span><b>37% said physical activity was included in their treatment plan.</b></li></ul><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some adults reported that regular exercise helped them maintain better eating habits, focus, energy, mental clarity, relationships, and productivity.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Parents also reported improvements in mood after physical activity in some children.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, these survey responses are based on personal experiences and should not be treated as the same level of evidence as controlled clinical research.</span></p><h2><b>What Does Recent Research Say About Exercise?</b></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A newer meta-analysis reviewed </span><b>18 studies</b><span style="font-weight: 400;"> looking at exercise and mental health in people with ADHD.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The researchers studied exercise as an additional found that </span><b>mind-body exercises</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">, such as yoga and tai chi, significantly improved both depression and anxiety symptoms.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In comparison, physical exercise without a mindfulness component, such as structured fitness activities or sports, did not show significant improvements across all of the mental health outcomes studied.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Researchers suggested that mind-body activities may provide additional benefits because they combine movement with ADHD, including attention and emotional regulation.</span></p><h2><b>Adolescents May Benefit More Than Younger Children</b></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The analysis found that adolescents with anxiety showed the greatest improvement from mind-body exercise.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Children also showed moderate improvements, but the results were not statistically significant.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Researchers suggested that age and development may help explain this difference.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Teenagers may be better able to understand and use the breathing, attention, and mindfulness parts of these exercises.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Younger children may respond better when movement activities are more playful, engaging, or game-based.</span></p><h2><b>Moderate-Intensity Exercise May Be Helpful for Depression</b></h2><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The strongest statistically significant reduction in depressive symptoms was seen with </span><b>moderate-intensity exercise</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Low-intensity and high-intensity exercise did not show measurable benefits for depression, anxiety, or emotional regulation in this analysis.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The exercise programs included in the studies varied greatly. Organized with help from The University of Texas at Austin, a collection of 17 studies from six countries-published in the journal </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Child Development</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">-reveals that most children recovered significantly in their health, education, social growth, and overall well-being over time.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Initial research gathered during lockdowns warned of severe, lasting harm to children. However, tracking children across a longer timeframe offers a different outcome: while pandemic impacts were genuine and wide-ranging, many negative effects naturally faded over time. Where lasting setbacks occurred, they appeared mostly among children who were already experiencing challenges-such as economic hardship or limited resources-before the pandemic began.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;This means children’s resilience ensured the pandemic’s consequences were not universally catastrophic, and they weren’t uniform either, which is a cause for optimism,&#8221; stated Gabriela Livas, co-editor of the collection and professor at UT Austin. She noted that even vulnerable children handled the situation in various ways, shaped by many background factors beyond shutdown measures alone.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As part of the project, Livas studied low-income elementary students in Tulsa, Oklahoma, who participated in early childhood programs prior to the pandemic. Teacher reports indicated that most child behaviors stayed stable before and after pandemic disruptions. Researchers found no increases in aggression or attention problems, alongside only a small drop in prosocial behaviors like sharing, cooperating, and showing empathy.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Co-editor Anna D. Johnson of Georgetown University added that the findings challenge assumptions of universal &#8220;learning loss&#8221;. The long-term project, called Early Autism/ADHD Sweden (EASE), uses several advanced research techniques and has already provided new insights into early signs of autism and ADHD. The new extension makes it possible to study how children’s growth changes over time.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">How do autism and ADHD appear early in life, and how do those early signs connect to later growth? Researchers have been investigating these questions through the EASE study since 2011. The project is a long-term research partnership between the Center of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (KIND) at Karolinska Institutet and the DIVE lab at the Department of Psychology, Uppsala University.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Today, when early symptoms raise concern, parents are often informed that the signs are not yet distinct enough for a diagnosis, meaning progress must be tracked over time. In the EASE study, researchers monitor children who have a close relative with autism or ADHD, which raises their likelihood of receiving a diagnosis. At the same time, most participating children do not end up with a diagnosis. This setup allows scientists to observe both typical growth and early variations within the same study.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;The EASE study is one of the most extensive and long-running research programmes in Sweden in this field. What makes the project special is that we follow children from the very first months of life and combine many different methods,&#8221; says Terje Falck-Ytter, professor of psychology at Uppsala University and research group leader at KIND, Karolinska Institutet.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The research team collects behavioral records and performs clinical evaluations while using tools such as eye tracking, pupil measurements, EEG, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. The project also examines gut microbiota to explore whether it affects early brain growth.
